Featured Garden Clubs

Emerald Necklace Garden Club

(ENGC) was founded in 1964 with a purpose of cultivating beauty through gardening, studying the art of floral design, promoting education and encouraging cultural enrichment and conservation. The club is a member of Garden Club of Ohio, Inc., Cleveland District; National Garden Clubs, Inc., Central Atlantic Region and is a Holden Forests & Gardens Affiliate. ENGC meets monthly except in July and August on the second Thursday of the month at 9:15 AM at Christ the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Brecksville. Our members live in Brecksville, Broadview Heights and surrounding communities. Membership is open to anyone interested in any aspect of gardening and/or floral arranging. The club is actively seeking new members, and guests are always welcome at meetings.

Some monthly programs are presentations by speakers on a garden-related subject. Field trips to local nurseries and gardens are popular, as are hands-on meetings to create floral designs that provide practice for our biannual flower shows or result in decorations for members’ homes. Projects that involve every member include a “Posies in Pots” flower arranging table at Brecksville Metropark’s annual Fall Fest in September; decorating a tree for the Glow holiday festival at Cleveland Botanical Garden and planting a container in the Hershey Children’s Garden there; participating in GCO (Garden Club of Ohio) projects and hosting our annual fundraiser – a spring benefit luncheon held in May. Proceeds from the luncheon provide scholarships for the OSU-ATI and GCO scholarship programs, and fund the club’s youth and public education programs, as well as the club’s monthly speakers. Donations are also provided to Western Reserve Land Conservancy, Nature Conservancy of Ohio, West Creek Conservancy, GCO Feed Ohio Project, Yuletide Hunger, Seeds of Friendship and Holden Forests & Gardens Green Corp Program and School Transportation Fund.

ENGC received 10 awards from GCO in 2018, and was named Outstanding Garden Club 2018 – Medium Club. First Place awards were in Youth, Holiday, Community Enrichment and Publicity categories. The club’s 2018 “Garden Party” flower show and flower show Schedule took first place awards, and were also awarded a Certificate of Merit from National Garden Club. Stay in touch with ENGC at its website: www.EmeraldNecklaceGardenClub.com and Facebook Page: Emerald Necklace Garden Club.

Avon-on-the-Lake Garden Club

Avon-on-the-Lake Garden Club was organized on March 20, 1930, and is going strong after almost 89 years. Our objectives are to promote the interests and knowledge of our members and the community in home gardening, floral design and the encouragement and participation in civic planting and conservation. We currently have 75 members. We plant and maintain seven civic gardens around the city of Avon Lake. Every year on Arbor Day, we plant a tree in one of our public parks. We also provide materials, flowers, and instruction in monthly garden therapy to the residents of Towne Center, a Transitional Care Center. On Mother’s Day weekend we offer hardy perennials and house plants to the public for donations to help fund our projects throughout the year. Our members also participate in Avon Lake Pride Day in May by cleaning and mulching our civic gardens and also march in the Memorial Day Parade. Our club installed and maintained the Blue Star Memorial Garden at Veteran’s Park.

In 2016 our club received the Kellogg Civic Achievement Award for First Place for our President’s program from the National Garden Club. This program promoted the need to increase native solitary bees by installing nine bee houses in civic and community gardens throughout the city and by providing two registered speakers to civic organizations. We also won 24 awards and were honored as the Ohio Garden Club of the Year in 2016 for Overall Performance.

Our project for 2017-2019 is supporting the National Garden Club’s Plant America Project. We are designing and installing a 3,000’ Pollinator Outdoor Garden at the Old Firehouse Community Center. This project is supported by two schools, the public library, Community Center, city employees, and members of the Garden Club. We received a $1000 grant from National Garden Clubs, Inc. and a $9,315 grant from the Lorain County Commissioners. President Jennifer Fenderbosch is coordinating this project.

Our club meets monthly at 11:30 on the first Wednesday of the month at the Avon Lake Public Library except in January, July, and August. During the summer months, we focus on our civic gardens and explore other gardens of interest in the region. We are planning a Petite Flower Show in the spring of 2020. Visit avonlakegarden.club

The Herb Guild

The Herb Guild is a predominantly west side organization that has been in existence for over 40 years. The members meet on the second Wednesday of the month at Porter Public Library in Westlake, Ohio (27333 Center Ridge Road) in the Porter Room. Although the name suggests that the club is primarily associated with herbs, the members are very interested in all types of gardening, including flowers, house plants, and vegetables. We enjoy sharing our knowledge of herbs and plants with everyone via our meeting or monthly newsletter. The club also has a website theherbguild.org and is on Facebook under The Herb Guild.

The Herb Guild is a member of The Cleveland Botanical Garden and The Garden Club of Ohio. We participate in events sponsored by these two organizations as well as our own meetings, bus trips and workshops. The club received seven awards in 2018 presented by the Garden Club of Ohio, including first place for its website, membership flier, the youth club award, and the civic beautification award.

Monthly meetings usually involve a business meeting, a lunch provided by different groups of members each month, and a workshop or presentation. The meetings last from 10am to 2pm. Membership dues are $25 per year and members are expected to participate in club events. There are currently 50 members in the organization. Projects include maintaining a public herb garden at Rosehill in Cahoon Park of Bay Village, the annual Scholarship Luncheon in August which provides scholarships for 2-3 area students, and various workshops sponsored by the club. We always welcome new members either to join or try us for a monthly meeting or two. If you would like more information, please contact Joyce Hayward at 330-801-7202.
