Green Corps is Cleveland Botanical Garden’s award-winning work-study program for Cleveland teens. Each summer, our students “earn as they learn” to transform vacant city lots into flourishing urban farms and sell their sustainably grown produce to the public. The new winter curriculum allows students to further their knowledge of the urban environment and earn high school course credit or community service hours. In the process, they gain self-esteem, build positive relationships with adults, create friendships built on trust and envision new possibilities for their lives.
In their own words:
I like learning in a way that gets me active. I need something that’s hands on. That’s why I love this job. Everything is hands on: watering, weeding, mulching, pruning.
I’ve been with Green Corps for three years. If everything goes right, I’ll be studying botany and horticulture at college.
Photosynthesis didn’t make sense in school, but now it does because they care here.
We all get along really well. We’re like a family.
Green Corps is a good first job because it molds you for other jobs. You learn what’s right and not right on a job, responsibilities on a job and proper vocabulary and language.
Your donation to Green Corps will keep the program growing and inspire this year’s teens, build productive green space in Cleveland neighborhoods and provide fresh, sustainably grown produce to area residents.
